Reason 442: Failed to enable virtual adapter–Cisco VPN Client : Windows XP

Several times, I faced the above error while connecting the Cisco VPN client to connect to the corporate VPN network. I use a Windows 7 for work and to connect to the corporate VPN, I use the Windows XP mode (free Windows XP VM from Microsoft) along with Microsoft Virtual PC. I face this error mostly after I restart the Windows XP VM.

Following is the method, that may work if you are facing the problem “Reason 442: Failed to enable virtual adapter”.

1. Open “Network Connections” module in control panel.

If you are using the “category view” in Control Panel, you can find “Network Connections” in the “Network and Internet Connections” category.

2. Locate and enable the “Cisco Systems VPN adapter” network adapter. This will be disabled by default.

3. Right Click on it and select Properties. In the general tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.

4. Select “Obtain an IP address automatically” and click “OK”.

5. Click “OK” to close the properties dialogue and repair the connection by right clicking the connection.

6. Ignore if you see an error saying, it cannot get an IP for the connection. That is normal, as the connection is not established.

7. Disable the “Cisco Systems VPN adapter” network adapter and try connecting to your VPN using the Cisco VPN client.
